Mayor Jerry Sanders, a long-time supporter of the San Diego Convention Center, has created a task force comprised of San Diego citizens to evaluate and recommend necessary steps to expand the building. Formation of this task force moves the Convention Center closer to an expansion that could bring total exhibit space to approximately one million square feet as soon as 2014.
Mayor Sanders charged the task force with:
- Reviewing the current state of the industry
- Evaluating the feasibility of an expansion
- Identifying financing options
- Seeking public comment
- Identifying issues surrounding public access, waterfront enhancement and conservation
Once the task force has completed each of these undertakings, they will present their findings and recommendations to Mayor Sanders no later than September 2009.
San Diego Convention Center Corporation board member Cheryl Kendrick and San Diego Port Commission Chairman Steve Cushman will serve as co-chairs of the task force. Community leaders and representatives from a broad spectrum of San Diego’s citizens, taxpayers, organized labor and hospitality industry will comprise the remaining members of the task force.
