When it comes to being green, the San Diego Convention Center has always taken the lead. From big changes to small innovations, we keep finding ways to protect the planet.

For the San Diego Convention Center it’s actually “watts down” for being one of the largest organizations in the region to reduce energy consumption. In May, San Diego Gas & Electric Co. recognized the Center for energy-saving measures, which began in 2005, when the central plant was upgraded by replacing 3,400 tons of absorption chillers used for venting and air conditioning with new energy-efficient chillers. The results have been increased efficiency and reduced energy consumption of an impressive 2.7 million kWh per year. To put that into perspective, saving 2.7 million kWh per year is equivalent to powering 273 homes for one year or planting 560 acres of trees.

Centerplate, the Center’s exclusive in-house caterer, is now supplying attendees with water bottles that have a new and improved earth-friendly design. The new bottles from Nestle Waters North American are the most light-weight beverage bottles on the market, using between 30-44% less plastic than other leading brands.
Additionally, Nestle Waters North America produces 98% of their bottles in their own energy-efficient plants, which avoids the need to truck 160 million trailer loads of empty bottles per year and saves 6.6 million gallons of associated green house emissions.
