Convention Center Hosts Trio of Major Medical Shows

Medical meetings provide healthy dose of economic infusion for the region while showcasing news and developments on scientific and medical advances.

San Diego (November 6, 2007):  More than 45,000 medical professionals from around the world will come through San Diego as the San Diego Convention Center plays host to a trio of major medical shows.  In addition to producing tremendous economic benefits for the San Diego region, the three medical shows are expected to generate significant public interest as news of the latest scientific and medical advances is showcased during these meetings.

In total, these three events -  the Society for Neuroscience, which is currently meeting at the Convention Center, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, which begins next Tuesday, November 13, and the American Society of Human Genetics, which was meeting in our building during the October wildfires - are forecast to generate an impressive $171.26 million in economic impact for the San Diego region, including $71.3 million in direct attendee spending and $2.77 million in hotel room and sales tax revenues. In 2007 alone, the Center will play host to 18 medical shows, representing nearly one-half of the Center’s total economic impact for the year.

The following is a brief summary of key statistics for each meeting:

 

  • Society for Neuroscience, Nov. 3-7

Attendance: 32,000                                                      Economic Impact: $120.4 million

Direct Attendee Spending: $50.18 million                      Total Tax Revenues: $1.9 million

The 37th annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience marks the third time in six years that the Society has met in San Diego and they are booked to return in 2010. The 2001 annual meeting was the Society’s largest conference ever with 28,600 attendees and attendance continues to soar with each return visit to San Diego.

 

  • American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Nov. 13-15

Attendance: 7,500                                                        Economic Impact: $28.2 million

Direct Attendee Spending: $11.7 million                        Total Tax Revenues: $457,946

 

The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists 2007 Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Diego is the world’s largest gathering of pharmaceutical scientists. More than 8,000 international scientists are expected.

 

  • The American Society of Human Genetics, Oct. 24-26.

Attendance: 6,000                                                        Economic Impact: $22.5 million

Direct Attendee Spending: $9.4 million             

Total Tax Revenues: $366,357

Founded in 1948, the American Society of Human Genetics is the primary professional membership organization for human geneticists in the Americas.

 

The San Diego Convention Center Corporation is a public benefit corporation created by the City of San Diego.
