Mayor Dick Murphy and the San Diego City Council appointed Robert Gleason, Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel for Evans Hotels, to serve as a new board member of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation. In his capacity as Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel, he is responsible for all finance, tax, accounting, audit, information technology, and legal issues. Mr. Gleason serves on the board of directors of the Old Globe Theater and its executive committee and the board of U.S. Bank San Diego County. He is also the former chair of the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center and continues to serve on their board. A nine-member board of directors sets policy for the San Diego Convention Center Corporation. The Mayor and City Council appoint seven voting members who serve three-year terms. Two additional non-voting members round out the board representing the hotel industry and the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau. The San Diego Convention Center Corporation manages, markets and operates the San Diego Convention Center. The facility is one of the region's strongest economic engines and is presently celebrating its 15-year anniversary. Since opening in 1989, the Convention Center has generated $10 billion in economic impact, $227 million in tax dollars that reduce the burden on local taxpayers, created region-wide jobs and serves as the community's premier gathering place.
