Record-breaking Events and Attendance Highlight Convention Center’s FY06 Annual Report

Bayside building generates over $1 billion in regional economic impact

The San Diego Convention Center Corporation released its FY06 Annual Report today indicating record-breaking attendance and events. An all time-high 281 events were held attracting a record 950,710 attendees through the Convention Center’s front doors.  Seventy-one of these events were national conventions that drew 511,881 out-of-town visitors who infused $1.1 billion into the local economy underscoring our mission to generate significant economic benefits for the San Diego region.

These events also helped to reduce the tax burden on local taxpayers.  In FY06, $21.6 million in hotel room tax revenue (TOT) was contributed by convention attendees, as well as $1.5 million in sales tax revenue.  The TOT revenue, generated by attendees staying in hotels, represents 15.4 percent of the City of San Diego’s total TOT collected in FY06 and helps pay for important city services.

In addition to summarizing the Convention Center’s FY06 accomplishments, which occurred between July 1, 2005 and June 30, 2006, the report also highlights the building’s successful expansion which opened five years ago.  Since the expansion opened, the Convention Center has generated an average of $1 billion annually for the local economy.

The FY06 Annual Report is in an electronic format.  It can be accessed by visiting http://www.visitsandiego.com/pressroom/annualreports.cfm.
