San Diego Theatres, a non-profit subsidiary of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation, manages, operates and markets the San Diego Civic Theatre and upon its restoration, the historic Balboa Theatre. A five-member board of directors comprised of diverse business and community leaders provides direction.
The 2,967-seat Civic Theatre, which opened in 1965 adjacent to City Hall, is the region's largest and most diverse theatre for world-class entertainment. The crown jewel among local performing arts venues, the Civic Theatre is home to the San Diego Opera, Nederlander's Broadway/San Diego, the California Ballet and numerous annual community events.
The Balboa Theatre was built in the 1920s during vaudeville's heyday and has retained many of its distinctive historical elements. Located in the downtown Gaslamp District, the Balboa was acquired by the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC), the city's non-profit, public redevelopment agency. CCDC plans to restore the Balboa and upon its re-opening, San Diego Theatres will market and manage the 1,400-seat theatre as a venue for cultural, community, cinema, convention and corporate events.
